Faro, the capital of the Algarve, has a more distinctly Portuguese feel than most resort towns.
This town, which overlooks the lagoons of the protected Ria Formosa Natural Park, has a rich cultural heritage as well as beautiful beaches. It has a lovely marina, well-kept parks and plazas, and a historically significant old town surrounded by medieval walls.
One of the most popular activities is exploring the old town. The most important historical monuments are concentrated within the walls of the Old Town. Its winding, cobblestoned pedestrian streets, squares, and buildings house museums, churches, a bone chapel, and outdoor cafes.
There is an archaeological museum as well as the “Bishops’ Palace,” a Renaissance cathedral that was heavily bombed during WWII but was later rebuilt.
The Comboio Turstica, or tourist train, is a unique way for visitors to discover Faro.
